Recent low tides have enabled Maiden’s Primary School pupils to find and identify this year’s Harbour Gala Mermaid.

Last year’s mermaid, Sophie Cuthbert, knew just the right place by the rocks to discover a suitable mermaid for this years Gala and backed by her fellow pupils in primary six,

Charlotte Handsley who, when on dry land lives in Kirkoswald, has been selected to be brought ashore by the lifeboat crew and crowned at 1.30pm. on Saturday, August 13 in time for the start of the this year’s gala.

This year, there will be over 20 stalls covering everything from wedding cakes, plants, jewellery, cake decoration, paintings, home knitting, plus home baking. As well as the usual popular burger kipper and tea stands this year there will be, a soup stall and of course a beer tent.

Entertainment will range from two dance displays, Owl Magic display, pony rides, kiddies entertainments and a chance to test your skill and win £25 by driving onto our floating golf green. There will also be a car boot sale area. We look forward to a great day out for the many who attend.

Last year’s Gala, with it’s many interesting stalls, including the renowned barbecued kipper stall, raised impressive funds to assist in the many improvements recently made at the Harbour.

At the Harbour, the never ending job of dredging and keeping the channel cleared goes on whenever the tides allow but this year with the main structural work largely now in place, the volunteers will be concentrating on tidying up the Harbour approaches and installing information boards as well as seats and picnic facilities for the public.
