Some fabulous prizes await green-fingered gurus in South Ayrshire – as a new ‘Best Kept Garden’ competition is launched by the Council for individual gardens.
Open to all South Ayrshire residents and Council tenants, Spring 2015 promises to be an even more fragrant time, thanks to funding from the Council to help support and manage the competition.
In addition, the Council will also be promoting local communities to Keep Scotland Beautiful’s ‘Beautiful Scotland’ campaign which is run in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society.
Previously known as ‘Beautiful Scotland in Bloom’, the programme supports community groups across Scotland to improve and enhance their local environment.
Councillor John McDowall. Portfolio Holder for Sustainability and Environment said: “South Ayrshire is a stunning place to live, work and relax and boasts a wide range of amazing natural scenery, from coasts and cliffs to parkland, green spaces, rolling hills and views that simply take your breath away.
“It makes perfect sense to encourage tenants and residents to make the most of their own natural environments by working on their gardens, presenting them in the best possible light for entry to this fantastic new competition.
“In the weeks and months ahead, we’ll be aiming to work with Community Councils, tenant and residents’ groups and individuals to help make local gardens blossom.”
The Council is presently working on the final competition details, with entry forms, judging dates and times to be announced shortly.
Councillor McDowall continued: “As well as making the local area look bright, attractive and vibrant, gardening is incredibly therapeutic and an excellent hobby or pastime for anyone.
“And, with the evenings getting that bit lighter and milder, what better time to dig out your forks, spades, and pruning shears and get to grips with your gladioli, tackle the tulips and have a close look at your lawn!
“Who knows ... in a couple of months you could be the winner of our Best Kept Garden competition – wouldn’t that be a blooming marvellous reward for your efforts?”
