Last Friday some 150 students from Girvan and Carrick met at Girvan Academy to quiz candidates ahead of the Scottish Parliamentary elections this May.
Speakers included regional list candidates for the South of Scotland Stuart Cooper (RISE); Eurig Scandrett (Greens) as well as Jeane Freeman (SNP) and Carol Mochan (Labour). Council leader Bill Grant was also in attendance representing the Conservatives. After a five minute introduction from each speaker, students grilled candidates on the barriers facing young people; the Syrian refugee crisis; reducing income inequality; apprenticeships and the future of Trident.
Recognising the urgent need for young people’s voices to be heard, students were then given the opportunity to register to vote. This can be completed online at: https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
