I will never forget an incident that happened to me one Parents’ Night long ago when I was working as a teacher.
When I met the parent of one particularly difficult pupil I remember her saying to me ‘I can’t understand why he is so badly behaved. We have always given him everything that he’s ever wanted.’ I wanted to explain to her that that might be the reason for his poor behaviour right there. He had been spoiled. He had never known the word ‘No.’ And by doing that, they had not helped prepare him for adult life.
I remember when I was growing up repeatedly being told that I could not have something, that for a short time, I thought that I not only desperately wanted, but felt that I desperately needed too. However by sometimes saying ‘No’ rather than ‘Yes’ my parents taught me an important life lesson. That we cannot have everything that we want in this life.
Sometimes the things that we seek we might eventually have, but only if we are willing to put in the hard work necessary and even then there is no guarantee that we will succeed in all our goals. But we can learn from our failures as well as our successes.
There are some people who view God as a parent who will give them whatever they want. And they get somewhat disillusioned if something they have asked God for, they do not get when they want it.
We should remember God is generous to all of us. He gives us wonderful gifts throughout our lives. But God is not there to give us everything we demand from him.
He knows that sometimes the things we ask for are not always right for us.
