The Girvan And South Carrick Community Sport Hub has launched a new sports youth club for the weekend called ‘That Friday Thing’.

The free weekly sessions, for all pupils from P6–18yrs, are delivered by senior pupils from Girvan Academy who have progressed through a range of coaching qualification as part of the Sport Academy.

The sessions are managed by Youth Workers from Girvan Youth Trust and supported through Active Schools and South Ayrshire Sports Development.

This programme has proved popular in Girvan with around 70-80 young people in attendance every week, providing not only an opportunity for physical activity but also a diversionary activity for the weekend. TFT is delivered every Friday night during term time from 6.30pm-8pm for P6–S1 pupils and from 8pm-9.30pm for S2–18yrs.

Community Sport Hub Officer Gareth Turner said: “That Friday Thing is a great example of effective partnership working benefiting local communities. The number of young people participating in these sessions has been fantastic and beyond our expectations. By growing and developing our own coaches locally through the Sports Academy programme in Girvan Academy we are creating opportunities for our young people to play a lead role in the development of sport in South Carrick.

“The success of That Friday Thing is testament to the work of our partners and I would like to thank Girvan Youth Trust, Girvan Academy, Active Schools and Sports Development.”
