These beautiful stones are to be found in local burns or along the shore below Culzean Castle.

The talent is in knowing what to look for, and lots of patience.

It is a long, intricate process from the stone in the burn to the amazing finished pieces.

There are several varieties of agate, all formed millions of years ago by volcanic action and earth movement.

A spokeswoman for the SWI said, “It was a wonderful insight into our history and world features at the dawn of time. Our thanks to Mr McIntyre, and his wife, for the fascinating presentation.”

Competition winners on the night were: A jar of jam – 1 Margaret Brown 2 Kate Banyard 3 Helen Marr

Flowers in a teapot – 1 Lesley Rodger 2 June Rutter 3 Anne Walker
