Something rather special is being broadcast live on ITV on Sunday night from half past seven.
The Three Mills Studios in East London will be screening a performance of The Sound of Music.
This is the first time a musical drama has been broadcast live in Britain. America did this to great success in 2013 on NBC, also with The Sound of Music. With last week’s big live editions of The X Factor, ITV has shown that it can do successful live shows and it is hoped that this version will prove to be a ratings winner.
It is quite brave of ITV to attempt something like this and with so much pre-recorded entertainment it makes a very pleasant change. Although most people know Rogers and Hammerstein’s musical best from the Julie Andrews film, it was originally a stage musical and it is this version of the story which is featured in this production.
Several well-known TV stars will be featuring in the show including Kara Tointon (Eastenders and Mr. Selfridge) as Maria; Julian Ovenden (Downton Abbey) as the Captain; Katherine Kelly (Coronation Street) as the Baroness and Alexander Armstrong (Pointless and The Sarah Jane Adventures) as Max. The musical is based on the real life story of the Von Trapp Family Singers. Set in Austria in 1938, it tells of what happened when a young nun is sent to look after the seven children of Geog von Trapp. Maria makes a huge difference and nothing is ever quite the same again.
