Variety is back with a bang

Variety is returning to ITV in a big way in the next few days. There will be another series of the Palladium show a week tomorrow, but before that on Saturday at seven o’clock there will be the new series of Britain’s Got Talent – its tenth.

Unlike its sister show – The X Factor – where there is always a debate about which judges are remaining and which ones are leaving – BGT is keeping the same judges that it has had for the past five years.

Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams will be returning to judge a variety of talented and not so talented performers.

While the X Factor only has singers on its show, this programme features a variety of talented people including dancers, magicians, musicians, comedians and acrobats. Last year the competition was won by an animal act with a magician ending up as runner up. This has been one of the major changes in recent years with illusionists ending up in the final when previously they tended to be eliminated fairly early on. This year’s speciality acts include a very fast tortoise, a dancing polar bear and a one man band on stilts. As usual Ant and Dec will be back after their successful series of Saturday Night Takeaway making amusing comments from the wings and encouraging the acts. The Golden Buzzer will also return when each of the judges (and Ant and Dec) have an opportunity of putting through an act straight through to the semi-finals. There is an incredible prize for the winner – a quarter of a million pounds in cash and the opportunity to appear on this year’s Royal Variety Show. This has always been my favourite talent show because one never knows quite what is going to happen on it!
