Transport Scotland say planned improvement works on the A77 between Turnberry and Girvan are not a priority.
Then Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson viewed plans for the £9m upgrade in 2010 which would see 2.5 miles of road realigned and widened.
However, a Transport Scotland spokesperson said: “The Scottish Government is committed to improving road safety and journey time reliability for motorists and businesses along the A77.
“Although we are not currently prioritising the Burnside Improvement scheme, we are taking forward the long-awaited Maybole Bypass scheme with draft orders published last December.
“Motorists are benefitting from road improvement schemes at Park End to Bennane, Glen App and Haggstone and we continue to enhance this vital connection to and from the Loch Ryan ports helping support sustainable economic growth in Ayrshire and beyond.”
