Staff and residents at Girvan’s Ainslie Manor are smiling after winning a NHS competition which promotes oral health.
To coincide with National Smile Month, NHS Ayrshire and Arran’s Oral Health Promotion teams across Ayrshire organised a display competition for care homes in the region taking part in the Caring for Smiles programme.
Care homes received a campaign pack and they were encouraged to create a display or event demonstrating the importance and benefits of good oral health in an imaginative way which would be seen by residents, staff and visitors during the National Smile Month.
Throughout the month residents played quizzes, catchphrase competitions and famous smile games. Hints, tips and historical facts were shared along with healthy drinks and snacks being promoted.
Ainslie Manor eventually emerged as the winning care home in South Ayrshire with Maybole’s Fairknowe Nursing Home finishing second.
All participating care homes were presented with a certificate with the winners receiving baskets of fruit from Tesco.
Hazel Andrew, head of the project said: “National Smile Month is an excellent opportunity to bring an element of fun to a serious issue. Good oral health is vital for a healthy smile as well as a healthy body.
“We hope everyone had fun designing the displays and continue to use them after the judging to promote good oral care.”
