Ballantrae Scout Group’s spirits were soaring last weekend when they ran their first ever “Kite Fest” on Ballantrae’s Foreland.
The event had been postponed from the previous week because of the bad weather.
John Allsop, Group Scout Leader explains: “A Greek family came to live in the village and the two boys Andreas and Marcus had been Scouts in Greece. They joined the Scouts in Ballantrae and their mother Nicola started helping with the Beavers.
“Last year their father Deo came to show the Scouts how to make kites and explained that in Greece, at this time of the year, people make and fly kites. We had such a great time last year that we decided to do it on a bigger scale this year and invite adults and children from the surrounding area with kites to come and join us.
“It was a shame we had to postpone the event due to be held on the previous Sunday because of bad weather, but we had a great day on Saturday but, unfortunately, not a lot of wind.”
Deo Papakanelous said: “Kite flying at this time of year is a way of life in Greece. It’s a way of celebrating the arrival of Spring, the end of Lent and Easter.”
