Local SNP MSP Adam Ingram has welcomed the announcement from the Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon of an additional investment of up to £20 million to help those struggling most with the costs of the so-called ‘Bedroom Tax’.
This extra funding, available in 2014/15, will enable local authorities to increase discretionary housing payments for a second consecutive year.
The money will top up the payments in each local authority to the maximum permitted under UK legislation.
Commenting Mr Ingram said: “This week the Deputy First Minister has strengthened the support to those who are struggling,”
by allocating up to £20 million again next year.
“The Scottish Government have promised to continue to do all they can to help – but only an independent Scottish Parliament will give us the powers we need to scrap the Bedroom Tax.
“There is no doubt that people in Scotland are paying a heavy price for Westminster decisions. The Scottish Government are doing what they can with the powers available to mitigate the worst impact of those decisions.”
