PRESIDENT Nancy Agnew welcomed an excellent attendance of members and friends to their open night on Wednesday, February 8.

Minutes were read and approved followed by a business discussion and invitations were read from Alloway and Dalrymple for March.

Nancy introduced Mr Robert McQuiston from Carsluith who gave a talk and film show on Mercy Ships. Robert showed slides of a map of Africa to highlight areas of great poverty where the ships travel to. Mercy ships are a Christian charity with no discrimination or prejudice. They treat patients of all religions and denominations and all treatment is free of charge.

Slides of children with cleft palates were shown and how they benefitted from the operations on board ship.

People with various health problems ranging from eye defects, dentistry benign tumours, mental health issues, addiction and palliative care all attended too.

The crew are all volunteers with surgeons, doctors, nurses,, cooks security and many more aboard ship.

Areas in Liberia Africa have no running water and proverty and poor sanitation cause many deaths each year.

The ships provide help with all these problems and offer education and land work where needed.

The African mercy ship is equipped with six operating theatres, x-ray, CT scanner, wards and a library.

On behalf of members and friends Nancy gave a sincere vote of thanks.

Anne Robertson and Tricia McIlwrath raised £59.80 from a well filled sales table. A delicious supper followed and Robert McQuiston thanked everyone for their generous donation of £100 for the mercy ships and Jessie Brown on behalf of visiting rurals, Ballantrae, Pinwherry, Crosshill and Minishant thanked everyone for a wonderful evening.

A large raffle followed and Nancy thanked everyone who contributed to the evening and looked forward to welcoming everyone to their 85th birthday party to be held in the Boar’s Head Hotel, Colmonell on Wednesday, March 14 at 7pm.
