A contractor has been appointed to design and construct the new leisure and community facility for Girvan and South Carrick.
The news marks another positive step in the plans for the facility after the recent news of South Carrick Community Leisure (SCCL) being awarded £250,000 by both the Scottish Government and Carrick Futures.
Morrison Construction, a branch of Galliford Try plc have been awarded the contract to design and construct the £5m facility.
This will mean that updated designs will be produced and made available in the community in the New Year with a planning application being submitted to the council before Easter 2015.
All being well, construction work on the facility should start before the end of the year.
Andrew Sinclair, chair of SCCL said: “What a brilliant way to end the year, with contractors and nearly all our funding in place. It’s really exciting to think that work will get underway next year and our families and friends will be swimming in the pool, working out in the gym, or having fun in the soft play the year after.
“We’ll be working closely with Morrison’s to progress the design work and will have some exciting designs to share with our communities in the spring of 2015.”
Morrison Construction have appointed architects Archial Norr to the project to ensure industry standards are met on the project.
That means Paul Weston, who produced the initial designs for the building will continue to be involved with the project. Morrison Construction will also work with Devin Consulting – market leaders in the design and specification of swimming pools and equipment – to progress the plans.
Bill McIntosh, leader of South Ayrshire Council said: “The appointment of our design and build contractors shows just how far this project has come, especially over the last three to four months. And it’s a very clear and visible sign to the people of Girvan and South Carrick that they will be getting their new sport and leisure facility within the next two years.
“I look forward to seeing the more detailed designs that will show how this facility will be brought to life. And, more importantly, I very much look forward to seeing the construction work start before the end of next year.”
Eddie Robertson, Regional Director, Morrison Construction Scotland Central said: “We are delighted to have been chosen by South Ayrshire council to design and construct the new Girvan and South Carrick leisure facility. This appointment reflects our reputation and strong market presence within the leisure sector and we look forward to delivering a first class facility which will be of great benefit to the community in further developing sport, fitness and recreation in the area.”
The new facility is scheduled to open in the latter half of 2016.
