Convention points young people to careers and college courses

Skills Development Scotland (SDS) and UCAS are having a Higher Education Convention in Ayrshire where young people can find out more about careers, college and university.

The event, in the University of the West of Scotland’s Ayr campus, on Tuesday 8 September, brings together representatives from 30 Higher and Further Educations institutions in Scotland and elsewhere. These representatives will be on hand to offer advice as well as information on a variety of courses and learning pathways.

SDS’s Christine Maxwell said: “There will be campus tours, introductory talks and one of SDS’s own interns will speak at our morning and afternoon sessions.

“The Convention is a one-stop shop for young people and their parents to find out the facts about all the options open to them by offering access to the experts in one location at one time. Choosing which university, course, or career to pursue is a major decision so it is really important to have all the relevant information to help make that process clearer and easier.”

“Digital World will also be at the Convention, to show the opportunities available in the digital technology sector, as well as a number of employers who will be showcasing ‘learn while you work’ routes to Higher Education, non-traditional routes to degree qualifications and alternative learning pathways.”

Careers advisers from SDS will be at the free event to give impartial, one-to-one advice on options and opportunities including employment, training, Modern Apprenticeships and volunteering. The sessions will run from 9.15am to 12.15pm and 1.15pm until 3.15pm.

While the sessions are aimed primarily at fifth and sixth year pupils, anyone interested in finding out about Higher Education opportunities, including parents, carers and college students, are welcome to come along.

Gillian Lavercombe, University of the West of Scotland’s Marketing Manager in Student Recruitment, said: “The University enjoys extremely close links with Skills Development Scotland and we are delighted to be hosting such an important Higher Education convention at our Ayr Campus. This event will give prospective students from across Ayrshire the opportunity to learn more about the opportunities available to them in Higher Education.”
