Gardenrose pupils 40 years on

A wonderful time was had by all when the Primary 6 pupils from 1972 at Gardenrose Primary school in Maybole got together recently for a school reunion.

Former pupils who were the first Primary 6 class in the new school when it opened in Aug 1972 travelled from as far as London, Leeds, and Isle of Man for the event which was also attended by retired P6 teacher Mrs Jean Rosamond.

A surprise visit was also made by Mrs Cathy Murphy and her daughter Lisa. Cathy’s father Jeffrey Smith was the headmaster at Gardenrose Primary from the opening of the new school in August 1972 until his retirement in June 1983. He was a keen photographer and had a large collection of photographs of the new school, which Cathy had previously given to the reunion organiser Jean Jackson, to display on the day. Sadly Mr Smith had passed away in 2006 so this was a very kind gesture to have his cherished photographs displayed at the reunion. The organisers would like to thank Cathy very much.

The event was held at Ayr’s Malt Cross, and it’s already looking like there could be a follow up next year as there have already been a few requests made.
