Excitement is building in Girvan as the town prepares for its annual Civic Week which is packed full of fun for all the family.
The week, organised by the volunteers in the Girvan Attractions Committee, kicks off with the traditional crowning and parade on Sunday June 21st where Shannon Haining will be crowned as Queen and Jack McKenzie as King. This year’s Lady in Waiting is Estee McKie and the squire is Jack Brittain.
The crowning will take place at the putting green in Louisa Drive at 1.45pm with a parade going through the town shortly afterwards with this years theme being that of “wheels”.
Before the crowning a car boot sale will take place at 12.30pm in front of the Westcliffe Hotel, Louisa Drive with various stalls on display. Monday June 22 will see the start of the Civic Week Football competition with Hendries Butchers team taking on the Girvan Youths 1998 side in a 7pm kick off at Victory Park.
The following night (Tuesday 23rd) sees the Royal Hotel’s team take on the Athletic Tavern team again at 7pm.
Wednesday June 24 at 7pm sees William Grants team take on Jim Wilmer and Sons team before the winners from Monday night will take on the Central Bar on Thursday June 25 at 7pm. Friday June 26 will see the winners from Tuesday and Wednesday’s games play each other.
The big final will then take place on Sunday June 28 at 2pm in Victory Park.
After the crowning and parade on Sunday, the pet show will take place on Tuesday June 23 at 6.30pm in front of the Westcliffe Hotel. There are ten categories including looks most like the owner and waggiest tail. Each category costs 50p to enter and is judged by vet Alan Jeans with rosettes kindly donated by the Pet Shop.
The annual senior citizens party will take place on Wednesday June 24 at 2pm in the Catholic Hall, Henrietta Street. This is always one of the highlights of Civic Week and senior citizens can get their free tickets from the C.A.N shop in Dalrymple Street now. Entry is by ticket only for a fun afternoon of food, tea, music and chat with friends.
The final main event of civic week is the car treasure hunt, which the Girvan Attractions committee are keen to attract as many people as possible too.
The treasure hunt starts at 6.30pm in the Harbour Car Park and you will travel around Girvan and the surrounding area searching for clues before arriving back at the Westcliffe Hotel for a cuppa and the presentation.
Entry is £5 for the treasure hunt. It’s time to enjoy civic week!
