A DOZEN people interested in bringing a credit union to Girvan turned out to information sessions last week. Residents intrigued by what looks to be the Town Team’s first initiative to come to fruition headed to the community centre and Carrick Buildings on Tuesday to find out more.

Representatives of Kilwinning-based 1st Alliance – which recently expanded into Ayr and already has members in Girvan – answered questions and concerns and people could sign up there and then.

1st Alliance’s Craig Potter, who was invited to speak at the Town Team’s August meeting to explain credit unions, said he was impressed by the level of interest. “The turnout was really good, particularly given the weather and people being away on holiday,” he said.

“The people who turned up were all very positive and keen to get something started. We’re quite close to getting premises and volunteers in place so, hopefully, we will soon be ready to go.”

Craig said he was also pleased to see community representatives from Ballantrae at the meetings to see about expanding the credit union further.

A further session has been scheduled for Tuesday October 30 between 10am and 11am in the Community Centre at 82 Dalrymple Street. To join, photographic identification must be presented.
