A Royal Navy officer from Girvan has seen his career come full circle with his appointment as the officer in charge of new recruits’ training at HMS Raleigh in Cornwall.

Lieutenant Commander David Cunningham began his Royal Navy career as a rating, arriving at the gates of HMS Raleigh for his own initial training in 1983. Taking up his new appointment, he is now the head of the school responsible for turning raw recruits into Royal Navy ratings during a 10-week intensive course known as initial naval training.

The former Girvan Academy pupil said: “Having joined the navy straight from school at age 17, I have had a tremendous career serving all over the UK and around the world.
