LOCAL businesses in Girvan are being asked to come together to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next month.

In particular, shopkeepers in the town are being asked to decorate windows on the extended weekend of June 2-5 by the Girvan Business Association.

If any businesses would like to decorate windows they are being asked to contact the association by telephoning Gillian or Mark on 714412.

There will be an extra bank holiday in June 2012 to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The Diamond Jubilee celebrations will centre around an extended weekend in 2012 on 2, 3, 4 and 5 June.

The bank holiday for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will be on Tuesday 5 June. To form a long weekend of celebration the late May bank holiday will be moved to Monday 4 June.

Other plans to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee include: A Diamond Jubilee Medal - likely recipients and further details are under consideration and a UK-wide competition for towns to bid for city status, which launched in spring 2010.

Gillian Black of the business association also said that the shop frontage scheme launched by South Ayrshire Council has been delayed but they hope to see some progress soon.

Gillian said: “A lot of businesses were asked to fill in forms for the shop frontage scheme which would see shop frontages painted.

“We are working closely with South Ayrshire Council on the project. Surveyors have been in the town and we have been informed that there is £20,000 available for the project.

“But it is still going to be a few weeks away. We just want to let people know that the improvements will still be taking place but the final specifications are not through yet.

“If anyone has any further questions please get in touch with the business association.

“Hopefully there will be something done on this project by the end of the summer. We will be having a meeting of the association in the very near future.

“We have had a lot of support from Girvan Community Council and would like to thank them.”
