Dig deep this weekend to help one of Girvan’s own.
That’s because 18 year-old Lily Woodhouse is having a charity auction at the Catholic Hall in Henrietta Street this Sunday (18 August).
The former Girvan Academy pupil is heading to Uganda on September 1 to teach primary school children in the African country on a voluntary basis for a year.
Lily says that the Academy have been really supportive in the run-up to her trip.
“The academy have really helped me over the last year and they were the ones that encouraged me to apply for it.”
The auction starts at 10am when you will be able to view items and register as a bidder before the auction itself takes place between 11am-4pm with a break for lunch at 1pm.
Lily has almost reached her funding target but requires more help in the final few weeks of her funding.
“I need £5,400 to fund the trip and right now I have got £4,200. I’ve applied for a council grant so I’m quite confident of reaching my target as family and friends are willing to support me as well.
“My family and friends have been very supportive. My Mum is a bit nervous but is helping me out a lot.”
In order to be successful to go on the trip, Lily had to undergo teacher training.
“That was the first time I had ever done anything like that but I really enjoyed it. We had to make up lessons and then present them to the class so I was just glad I was picked from those who applied.”
Lily also had to do a lot of research about Uganda and when she touches down on September 1, it will be a culture shock to the teenager.
“Finding out about the country was one of the things we had to do and it actually made me more keen to go there. Living without running water and electricity will be tough but I’m up for the challenge.”
