ON September 1, Girvan woman Mary Jeans is on her way to trek up Mount Kilimanjaro raising funds for Alzheimer, Scotland.

Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and is considered the tallest freestanding mountain in the world.

The trek is 19,340 feet (5,895 metres) with the biggest challenge and danger being the high altitude.

Every penny raised by Mary is going directly to Alzheimer Scotland as the trip to the region itself has been self-funded.

Alzheimer Scotland provide practical and emotional support for people with dementia and their carers.

Dementia is the fourth biggest killer for women in Scotland and the ninth for men.

Donations or sponsorship would be welcomed by Mary. People can donate online through JustGiving, which is simple, fast and totally secure, or via sponsor forms in various places around Girvan or at Alan Jeans Vet Surgery, Wesley Road, Girvan.
