Maybole has been announced as one of five Scottish towns and villages to take part in a pilot scheme to cut speed on their main roads to 20mph.

The plans were revealed by the Scottish Government Transport Minister Keith Brown in a bid to improve safety.

The pilot project will mean drivers will have to slow down on the trunk roads and a consultation process is now underway for detailed proposals in Maybole.

The lower limits could be in place by next Spring. Maybole has a high amount of HGV road users as well as a high number of accidents involving cyclists and the elderly.

The other places in the scheme are Oban, Largs, Biggar and Langholm.
