More strikes to hit bin collections

Further discussions between South Ayrshire Council and unions have failed to reach agreement over refuse collection working hours with further strike action planned.

Jim Winter, regional officer for Unite in Ayr, said that the union was originally approached about changes to working hours and a change to a back shift pattern was imposed with no consultation.

He added that the council then imposed a variation to employment contracts with workers given 90 days to accept them with dismissal threated if they did not.

The Council is anticipating some disruption from the latest strike action. There will be two 30-minute strikes each day from 24 May-5 June, but householders are being asked to put their bins out on their normal collection day as the majority of bins will be emptied.

On the strike days, some staff on the early shift will stop working at 7:45am-8:15am and there will be another half hour stoppage for the backshift 7:45pm-8:15pm, but any backlog with be dealt with as soon quickly as possible.

For are any missed bins, householders should call the Council on 0300 123 0900 or go to to report it.

During the recent week-long strike action the council said it minimised disruption by emptying household green bins. There were also replacement uplifts for householders who missed brown bin collections and this continues as brown bins missed on 16,17,18 May will be emptied this weekend, 28-29 May.

Mike Newall, South Ayrshire Council’s Head of Neighbourhood Services, said, “We are disappointed with this latest announcement of strike action but we will continue to use all the means at our disposal to lessen the impact on householders. We are continuing to collect brown bins that were missed as a result of the week long action and I thank residents for their co-operation and for responding to our requests.”

Excess waste can be taken to one of the household waste recycling centres at Ayr, Maybole, Troon and Girvan. These centres are open as normal.
