KEN Johnstone has been elected as the new chairman of Girvan and district community council.
He takes over from Alec Clark who was recently elected to serve as a councillor for the Girvan and south Carrick ward on South Ayrshire Council.
The new vice-chairwoman is Winifred Wright with Christine Robertson continuing as secretary, Cathie Collins carrying on as treasurer and Eric Mackinnon elected as vice-treasurer.
There is also now a vacancy on the community council, should anyone wish to join.
Mr Johnstone said: “I am honoured to have been appointed chairman of Girvan Community Council. If I can do half as well as my predecessor Alec Clark I will be very happy.
“I came to Girvan in 1967 as a chemist at the then Alginate Industries, and I worked there in various positions for almost 20 years. I also, in partnership with my wife Karen, ran The Sands Hotel in the town for over 20 years.
“We moved from Girvan to Livingston in 2001 where we stayed till I retired in 2007, when we returned here to the town that we love.
“Since returning I have become involved with a number of organisations as well as the community council, as treasurer of Dailly Parish Church, treasurer of Girvan Youth Trust, a member of Girvan Musical society and treasurer of South Carrick Community Leisure (SCCL).
“I look forward to serving the community and will do my best to carry on the good work already started.” The next meeting of the community council will be Tuesday, July 3.
