South Ayrshire is now one of the top local authorities in terms of the amount of waste that is recycled, according to new figures.
In 2014 South Ayrshire recycled 50 percent of the waste that was produced; the highest it has been for at least four years, putting it in the top 12 local authorities.
It is a massive increase compared to ten years ago when only 6 percent of waste was being recycled.
Kenny Dalrymple, Neighbourhood Services Manager for South Ayrshire Council said: “Achieving a 50 percent recycling rate is a fantastic achievement when you consider the financial constraints currently being placed on local authorities.
“Our next target is to achieve a 60 percent recycling rate by 2020, and we are currently reviewing our waste strategies to see how we can meet that target.
“This may include increasing and extending our food waste recycling services and consideration of collection frequencies for all waste streams.”
