At the Rotary Club of Girvan Meeting in the Royal Hotel on 19th June the guest speaker was Douglas Brown who gave a fascinating illustrated account of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, the cinematic comedy duo.
Stan Laurel, born in Britain, always wanted to be a comedian and regularly truanted from school to attend his father’s theatre in Glasgow. Oliver Hardy was born in the USA and was a successful serious actor before teaming up with Stan.
They made 106 comedy films which included a successful transition from silent movies to talkies. In 1947 they visited Glasgow to a great reception and appeared with Norman Wisdom and Harry Worth.
The Club’s Vote of Thanks was expressed by John Douglas.
