LAST year a group of pupils involved in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme at Carrick Academy, Maybole, succeeded in building a 16ft Canadian canoe.

For the 2011/12 school year, the Design & Technology Department at the school went a little further, offering this year’s 6th year a chance to build a St Ayles Skiff.

The course reached a major milestone recently and the hull is now finished. The occasion was celebrated by having a turning over ceremony, where the jig used to form the hull was discarded and the boat turned over to start work on the internals.

This will start this month with a view to completing the build by the end of the Easter term.
