Can you tell a good story, true or false, real or imagined? Then why not enter the Ballantrae Smugglers’ Festival Short Story Competition being sponsored by the Carrick Gazette?
Ballantrae’s Smugglers’ Festival, now in its third year, is inspired by stories about smugglers from Ballantrae and the surrounding area in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. And so stories that focus on those times and that are set in the South West of Scotland, will be especially welcome.
There will be three categories and prizes for:
Children under 12 years of age on 1 July 2015 (any number of words up to 500 words including the title)
Young people over 12 years of age and under 18 on 1 July 2015 (maximum 1000 words including the title)
Adults (18 years or over) on 1 July 2015 (maximum 1000 words including the title
The closing date is 30 June and prizes will be awarded during Ballantrae Smugglers’ Week 16-22 August.

As well as a short story competition, this year’s Smugglers’ Festival will include a Smugglers’ Market; a Children’s Smugglers Day; the launch of a Smugglers’ Trail, a Primary School Smugglers’ Day; a “Smugglers’ Supper with whisky tasting, wine tasting & entertainment (an event for adults); a repeat of “Music Poetry and Smuggling Stories” (a family event); a skiff chase; a Craft Fayre; a Strongman Challenge and the lighting of a Smugglers’ Beacon. The Festival will also, once again, feature the popular Smuggler Scarecrows. More details will appear in the Gazette in due course including how you can be involved in the Festival even if you don’t live in Ballantrae!
