Strathclyde to host first Scottish Baby Race

MUMS, babies and bumps will descend on Glasgow’s Bellahouston Park on Saturday as the Strathclyde venue hosts Scotland’s first ever Baby Race.

The sponsored 5k run or power walk that parents can take part in with their baby and buggy will be in aid of national baby charity Tommy’s, which celebrates its tenth birthday this year.

Tommy’s funds research into pregnancy complications such as miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth, and provides free health information for all parents-to-be. And around 100 parents are expected turn out and show their support this weekend.

The Bellahouston event will begin with an aerobic warm-up near the Palace of Art, and the route will take you through the park’s beautiful formal gardens and serene open parkland.

Tommy’s asks each participant to try and raise £50 sponsorship - enough to pay for one of its midwives to speak to and help up to 20 worried parents. And upon crossing the finish-line, each participant will be awarded a fun-packed goodie-bag and prizes for top fundraisers.

Kirsty McCabe, Scottish mum of one and BBC weather presenter says: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be supporting the Tommy’s Baby Races this year. As a mother I really appreciate the work that Tommy’s does to make sure more women have a happy and healthy pregnancy.”

To register for the baby race visit Entry costs £14.50, and entries can be received right up until to start of the race or retrospectively.

The event will begin at 9.30am ready for the 10am warm-up. For further information contact event organiser Wendy McLeod on 07775 771330.

Those without buggy and baby and pregnant women are also welcome to take part. Pregnant women should speak to their GP or midwife, let them know the distance, whether they’re planning to run or power walk it, with or without a buggy and get their expert advice first.
