GIRVAN RNLI have received a cash boost thanks to canny weekly shoppers.

The team was triumphant in Asda Girvan’s Chosen by You, Given by Us initiative, which sees customers pick their favourite of three community groups to receive a cash prize.

Shoppers vote with tokens collected at the check-out over a two-month period, with the group with the most votes receiving £100.

Girvan RNLI beat Girvan Youth Football Club and the Community Action Network to the top award, but the runners-up each received £25 towards their own community efforts.

Mechanic Robert McMaster collected the lifeboat team’s cheque. He said: “It was actually very humbling to see how much we had won by. I was quite surprised as well because I think the other charities we were up against are very worthwhile. It is nice to see that there is still so much support for what we do from the local community.”

He said the money would help with the cost of the essential resources that keep the station going, such as fuel and electricity.

Mr McMaster was presented with the RNLI’s winnings by Asda community colleague Sharon Adams and ambient section leader Ann Nelson.

Sharon said: “Chosen by You, Given by Us is a fantastic opportunity for our customers to be able to support local groups, and the support from our customers for the local RNLI was amazing.”

The next three groups to vie for Asda patrons’ attention are youth dance organisation Y Dance, Girvan Community Playgroup, and Ballantrae Rural Initiative Care in the Community ltd (BRICC).
