Donald Trump has been given the go-ahead by South Ayrshire Council planners to transform Turnberry’s ninth hole into one of the most iconic in the world.
The tycoon, who was at the resort this week to unveil the multi-million refurbished clubhouse, has laid the ninth hole at the heart of his transformation plans on the Ailsa Course. The ninth is set to become a breathtaking par 3 played over the rocks next to the Turnberry Lighthouse, which is currently undergoing work to turn it into a halfway house.
There were initial concerns from conservation groups and Historic Scotland over Trump’s plans for the 9th as to accommodate the green, a historic wall garden will have to be knocked down.
These objections were withdrawn following meetings with Trump’s architects with Trump telling council planners that the demolition of the B-listed walled garden was crucial to the further development plans he has for the resort which he purchased in June last year.
