The November Meeting of the Girvan & District History Society will take place in the Mc Kechnie Institute Dalrymple Street. Girvan, on Thursday 24th November. Our speaker for the evening will be Jean Brittain. The title of her talk is, “Stones of Destiny”- Supernatural Rock Power in Ayrshire.
The legends of Ailsa Craig, the Market Cross as a legal witness, the tester lifts for manhood, and the luck in granny’s pebble brooch. The stories as to why stones have mattered so much to our superstitious ancestors
Stones have a deeply elemental place in our culture far beyond being mere landscape features or pretty baubles. Jean will tell us about the ones with extra powers to change the fate of living beings. The origins of the beliefs in these inanimate geological chunks of rock may be more curious than you thought.
