H. MacNeile Dixon back in 1944 commented in a paper ‘On parts of the continent female caddies are much in evidence, probably due to the natural desire of the inhabitants to find employment for their surplus female population’. Remember this was towards the end of World War 11 when no doubt the female population well outnumbered the males due to wartime fatalities.

In the US Open in 1960 Dow Finsterwald’s caddie told him ‘Why ask me? You’ve asked me twice already and paid no attention to what I said. So pick your own goddam club.’ I wonder what tip he received from Dow Finsterwald’s winnings.
