Carrick RFC are celebrating this week after achieving their dream of promotion after a 71-10 win over Loch Lomond.

They beat their opponents on Saturday at Maybole to clinch promotion to RBS West regional division one.

In a match sponsored by Jamieson Plant Hire and A G Dunlop Newsagents, Carrick only had to beat Loch Lomond to overtake their nemesis, Oban, and gain promotion.

By the end of the first quarter this was effectively achieved with four tries all converted by Kyle Johnson. The first was from Ross McCulloch who supported a Greg Montgomery break; the second from Montgomery after he made the extra man from full back; the third from Ross Knight from a break out from his own line and the fourth from flanker Gordon Gregor.

A 28 point lead became 56 with four more converted tries before the half time whistle. McCulloch, Johnson, Clark and second rower Dale all touched down.

As last week after the interval, Brown used his bench but the hunger and desire of the previous week was missing.

Grant Ward opened his account with a try early in the second half to increase the lead to 61 but the boys from Bonhill found a second wind and matched Knight and Clark’s unconverted tries with a penalty and a converted try to bring the final score to 71 – 10.

At Cumbernauld, Garnock defeated the home side and with a home game against Loch Lomond on Saturday look set to overtake Carrick and Oban to become the West 2 champions.

Coach Brown reflected that it had been a tough season, that he was pleased that Carrick had been the only side to beat Garnock and over the season the difference between Oban and themselves was one losing bonus point.

On Saturday Carrick will try and repeat their success at Arran with entry to the Kilmarnock Sevens Tournament.
