Cyclists look to up fitness levels

Members of the Ayr Roads/Harry Fairbairn Cycling Club turned out in force this weekend for the first of the New Year gatherings.

Saturday saw two groups embark on the first training session of 2014, with the road race season looming not too far around the corner.

The festive excesses were well and truly a distant memory with the riders looking to up the fitness levels and attain the speeds necessary to compete in the upcoming new season.

Sunday was the traditional New Year Club run to Colmonell, where a roaring log fire and a pot of homemade soup awaited the group.

Over 20 riders turned out, in what were very challenging conditions. A strong tailwind helped the re-fuelled cyclists make fast work of the homeward leg.

In an exciting development for 2014, Ayr Roads Cycling Club have joined forces with local independent bike shop Sprockets Cycles.

Opening in 2008, Sprockets has grown into a respected Ayrshire based retailer, where you can buy everything from parts and accessories to bikes for kids, novices, seasoned cyclists and semi-professional competitors.
