A DOUBLE-POINT lead for Girvan Primary was in store when they took on Barassie last week. On Wednesday March 20, and on home turf, the Girvan squad faced Barassie Primary in fresh but sunny conditions – pulling off an 8-4 win.
The game was closely fought even at the start, and the visitors managed the first goal.
But Girvan equalised almost immediately with a solo run finsihing with a well-taken goal by Paul McDowall.
Paul scored again soon after, and had secured a hat-trick by half time – an effort from close range by Jack Wilson making up the numbers in between. The half was noticeable for Girvan’s skilful, high-tempo passing, clever positioning, and effective communication.
The visitors started the second half well with a goal, but before Barassie had an opportunity to make a comeback Alan Harkness joined the goal-scoring spree with two goals in quick succession. And an unfortunate own goal boosted Girvan’s lead even further.
After Kyle Johnston, and debuts Eliot Rae and Nathan Tait came on as subs, a second goal from Jack Wilson at the game’s death put Girvan’s triumph beyond doubt.
A special mention must go to the ever effective and energetic Paul McDowall who covered every inch of the pitch – even ferociously tackling players several inches taller!
Connor Irvine’s passing was also exemplary and Alex McCrindle was an outstanding presence in defence, while Gregor Brown was, as ever, brave and reliable in goal.
The team’s next fixture will see them take on Holmston Primary in the first round of the Mackie Cup at the old racecourse in Ayr this afternoon.
