Girvan to bring in experience to kick start league campaign

GIRVAN are hoping to bring in some experienced players this week in order to get their league campaign back on track.

Girvan went down 2-0 at home to Saltcoats Victoria at the weekend but club chairman Tam McCreadie isn’t blaming his young players for the bad run of form.

On Saturday at Hamilton Park Girvan were without influential players Darren Mitchell and Tommy Maitland, who also bring some height to the team.

Saltcoats, who had a number of tall players in their line up on Saturday were able to deal with crosses from Girvan’s wide men on Saturday without too much trouble.

Both goals came in a five minute spell in the early part of the match.

In the fifth minute Saltcoats took the lead after a low cross into the box was turned into the net from close range.

Five minutes later it was 2-0 when a free kick from about 20 yards out was curled into the corner of the net.

Saltcoats were playing with the wind at their backs for most of the first half and it was difficult for Girvan to get a foothold on the game.

However in the 44th minute Craig Harvey hit the side netting from a shot from just inside the box.

Then just after half time Murchie’s shot from outside the box went just over the bar.

There was a good chance for Girvan to get a goal back in the 75th minute when Scott McQuade totally mis-hit a good cross when it looked as if it would be easier to score.

Tam McCreadie said: “On Saturday we are away to Muirkirk in the league and we should go up there and hopefully win. We will have Mitchell and Maitland back in the squad and it is possible that we may have a couple of more experienced players joing the squad but we will see what happens.

“We need a bit of experience in the team. The young boys are doing okay, it’s no fault of theirs, we’re just lacking a bit of experience at the minute.

“It’s a big step up from amateur to junior football and the game can be a lot faster.

“A wee bit of experience should start us off on a good run in the league and kick start our season.”
