Maybole let lead slip to lose on penalties

Maybole Juniors crashed out of the Ayrshire Weekly Press cup in the first round on Saturday after suffering a defeat on penalties.

Carlo Walker’s side lost out to Irvine Vics in a shoot-out despite looking to be in control of the game during a first half spell when they went 2-0 up.

Eventually, their opponents from Irvine, who are below Maybole in the Superleague First Division, won a low scoring penalty shoot out 2-0.

After an even opening to the game, it was Maybole who took the lead on the half hour mark when a free kick from Chris Allan took a slight deflection on its way into the net.

It was 2-0 to the home side shortly afterwards when Chris Reid picked up a ball on 38 minutes and crossed for Allan who made no mistake from close range.

The visitors were handed a lifeline four minutes before half time when a penalty was conceded and Kieran Paterson made no mistake from the spot.

The second half produced little in the way of chances though Andy Stevenson was denied by Chris Lamb as he looked to add a third for Maybole.

Irvine Vics piled on the pressure in the last quarter with substitute Kevin Adam firing wide before Scott Johnstone had to tip over a free kick from Paterson.

The equaliser came four minutes from time when Johnstone conceded a penalty and slotted home.

Aiden Keegan almost won it for Maybole with the last kick of normal time but his shot went wide.

The penalty shoot-out saw five out of the six spot kicks missed before Ryan Mckay netted for Irvine. Stevenson then missed before David Adams sent the visitors through.

Maybole are at home to Cumbernauld in the league on Saturday (11 April) at 2pm.

Meanwhile, Girvan FC play their final league match of the season on Saturday against Muirkirk at Hamilton Park with kick off at 2pm. Peter Leonard’s men will hope to end a difficult season with three points over the league’s bottom side.
