Maybole’s promotion hopes hang by a thread after they lost 3-2 at Irvine Vics on Saturday.
Despite goals from John Frame and a penalty from Andy Stevenson, it was their opponents in North Ayrshire who got a vital three points.
Maybole made the worst possible start when Robert Burgess opened the scoring for Vics after just five minutes before worse was to follow five minutes before half time when Bobby Colligan added a second for the home side.
Maybole roused themselves in the second half though as they turned the game on its head with John Frame pulling one back shortly after the restart.
However, they missed a penalty to make it 2-2 and Stuart Hannah punished that error with Stuart Hannah making it 3-1 with 15 minutes to go.
Andy Stevenson did make no mistake from the penalty spot to make it 3-2 but Maybole couldn’t find an equaliser. With four games to go, their promotion hopes now look slim.
Their next game is at home to Rutherglen at Ladywell Stadium on Saturday at 2pm.
Girvan FC didn’t play at the weekend having completed their league season earlier this month but they face Hurlford in the Ayrshire Cup on Saturday away from home.
Hurlford narrowly lost out to Auchinleck in the Scottish Junior Cup semi-final on Saturday so Girvan face a tough test in the match which kicks off at 2pm.
