New faces check in at Hamilton Park

girvan’s summer transfer dealings kicked into overdrive last week with five confirmed signings as they continue their preparations for the new season.

Free-scoring Sean McKenna, pictured, comes to Hamilton Park from Bellshill Athletic, Kyle Faulds signs permanently from SPL side St Mirren, Ian Fulton signs from Kilwnning Rangers, Michael Rutherford come in from Lugar Boswell Thistle, Darren Johnstone from Troon, and Stevie O’Donnell returns after a season in amateur football with the Vale of Girvan. McKenna’s goal-scoring exploits last season could see him become the man to replace Michael Moffat, after finding the target 25 times last season for relegated Bellshill and the one-time Clyde man comes to Hamilton Park with an impressive pedigree in junior football.

However, he won’t partnering George Wallace in attack. Wallace has left Hamilton Park to sign for Cumnock and joins former Girvan mate Aarron Connolly at Townhead Park.

Johnstone’s drawn-out transfer saga has ended well for the club, with the shot-stopper signing to replace Keith Ross in the Girvan goal.

Rutherford and Fulton give further options to manager Brian McLuckie as both can operate in a number of positions.

The Seasiders began their pre-season matches on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against Auchinleck Talbot, with Craig Harvey on hand to fire home a last-minute equaliser for the Seasiders

And on Monday night, a bumper crowd of more than 300 turned out to watch Moffat’s return to Hamilton Park in an Ayr United shirt.

The match was arranged as part of the deal that saw Moffat move to Somerset Park in January, with Girvan keeping all the gate money from the fixture.

But the Scottish First Division side had too much for McLuckie’s men and ran out 3-0 winners, the Honest Men’s goals coming from John Robertson, Gareth Wardlaw and Roddy Paterson.

The busy schedule continues with a visit to Cumnock tonight (Wednesday) and Beith at home on Saturday, before starting their Ardagh Glass League Cup campaign at Troon.

Still plenty of time for the new faces to bed in before the real business starts three weeks on Saturday away to Whitletts Vics on league duty on August 13.
