New Girvan boss Alan Cotton says that improving the Hamilton Park sides fitness levels is the key to ensuring that they rise up the league table.

Cotton replaces Iain Kearney who was relieved of his duties on Friday after a poor start to the league season which had resulted in only two wins for Girvan from their opening five games leaving the club 8th in the league.

Cotton began his reign with a 2-2 draw at home to Ardeer on Saturday with goals coming from Darren Mitchell and an own goal but admits there is a lot to do.

He said: “I am delighted to be here and I had actually been working with Iain Kearney doing a bit of coaching but circumstances meant that stopped about six weeks ago.

“However, I was asked by Martin Young if my circumstances had changed and I took the job.

“What I saw from Saturday’s game was that a lot of work needs done and that started with a training session on Monday night.

“The fitness levels are key to everything and need improvement but the squad is full of fantastic ability.

“There can be no doubting that Girvan have under achieved this season so far and the players know and accept that.

“I think the 14-0 win against Craigmark was a bit of a false dawn and no disrespect to Craigmark I’m going to learn more from playing the likes of Ardeer and Ardrossan (who Girvan play on Saturday).”

Striker Ryan Caddis moved to Irvine Meadow on Tuesday morning.

Cotton said: “Ryan leaves with my best wishes. He was unfortunate in his timing in joining the club but once he gets fully fit, he’ll do well at a big club.”

The recent winners of Girvan FC’s 50/50 draw have been : 11/9/13 :Suzi McCabe £97.50,18/9/13: Kyle McCreadie £126 , 25/9/13: Rab McCreadie £103.50 and 2/10/13 Billy McGaw £112.50 .
