AYR Racecourse staged its first meeting of 2014 on January 2 with some excellent racing in front of a crowd of more than 2,800.
There were doubles on the afternoon for trainer-jockey brothers Stuart and Steven Crawford from Larne in Northern Ireland and also for jockey Jason Maguire and trainer Donald McCain.
The Crawfords’ first winner came courtesy of 1/10 chance Fine Rightly in the opening race, the EBF ‘National Hunt’ Hurdle and they followed that day with Trucking Along easing to a three length win in the two mile five and a half furlong handicap hurdle at odds of 5/4.
The opening leg of the Maguire-McCain double saw a terrific piece of horsemanship from the jockey on board the 4/6 hot pot Swatow Typhoon in the novices chase.
The horse never went a yard and required major coaxing from Maguire and a slice of luck when chief market rival Milborough fell.
It was a different story in the last when Uppertown Cave (12/5 fav) cruised to victory in the National Hunt flat race.
There was a shock in the maiden hurdle when hot favourite Frankie’s Promise (5/4) was pipped close home by the Lucy Normile trained Rinnagree Rosie (20/1), ridden by Adrian Lane.
Ayr Racecourse’s next meeting is the Burns Raceday on January 27. To book tickets or for more information on racing at Ayr can call 01292 264179 or go online at www.ayr-racceourse.co.uk.
