BIRKMYRE 6 CARRICK 27
A DOMINANT second-half performance from Carrick saw them pick up the points on the opening day of the new season.
Now playing in the West League Three following last season’s relegation, the Maybole side travelled to Inverclyde to kick off their new campaign and, after a slow start, they eventually put in a very encouraging performance.
The first half was a scrappy affair with both sides struggling to turn possession and territory into points.
Carrick missed an early penalty attempt at the posts, but Birkmyre made no mistake with their two attempts to take a first-half lead of six into the interval.
But in the second half, Carrick came flying out the traps with an early try from youngster Connor Wyllie, who turned defence into attack with an interception deep inside the Carrick half and outpaced the Birkmyre defence to run in a superb try. Carrick continued to dominate from this point, with Aiden McCartney threatening to score down the left wing and eventually going over the line to score a try on his debut for the senior side, which Euan McGregor converted.
Another try was added late on by Grant Alexander to make the final score 27-6 to Carrick, who now sit fifth in the West Three league table after the first round of matches.
On Saturday, Carrick host Mull with the kick off at 3pm.
