One thing is for certain. Donald Trump will always get people talking.
His decision to rebrand Turnberry as “Trump Turnberry” this week has certainly caused a stir among locals across social media.
Concerns are rightly raised by people over Trump’s ego and how it could potentially see the name of Turnberry fade away.
However, a bigger picture needs to be looked at here.
There can be no denying that Turnberry is iconic and is known all over the world.
The same can be said for its new owner, Donald Trump.
Whilst people might be angry at Trump putting his stamp on the resort, they shouldn’t have been surprised. From his course in Aberdeen to courses across America, all have the Trump brand on them. It is what he does.
And people who say that it will always be Turnberry are correct to do so. Take the recent example of BT signing a £20m deal with Murrayfield, the home of Scottish rugby for naming rights.
Is anyone heading to rugby matches or indeed who went to see One Direction there recently going to call it the “BT Murrayfield” stadium? Of course not.
Turnberry will always be Turnberry even with the presence of Trump’s name.
When he is talking of putting £100m into the hotel, then that level of investment into this area cannot be overlooked.
It is understandable that people want to hold onto history particularly when it comes to a course and resort as beautiful as Turnberry.
That history isn’t suddenly going to die just because Trump has put his name in front of his new resort.
Instead, with a golf fan and billionaire at the helm, the resort could be looking forward to an even brighter future in the next few years as it hosts the biggest golf tournaments.
