Late licence for 40th Girvan Folk Festival

Prominent local businesses in Girvan have been given a late licence over the weekend of the 40th Girvan Folk Festival.

At a meeting of South Ayrshire Council’s licensing board on Thursday 24 April, the Westcliffe Hotel and the Le Mirage nightclub were granted extra hours to stay open later during the event.

The Westcliffe Hotel in the town’s Louisa Drive which will be hosting various events during the festival will be open until 2am from Friday May 2 until Sunday May 4 inclusive.

The Westcliffe will be hosting an opening night concert on the Friday which will feature Stranraer’s Robyn Stapleton trio with Claire Hastings, Arthur Johnstone and the stars band. Their set will begin at 8pm.

On the Saturday and Sunday’s of the festival the hotel will be hosting competitions in songwriting and traditional singing on the Saturday from 11 am and competitions in storytelling and verse recitation on the Sunday from the same time before hosting an open stage/folk group competition at 3pm on the Sunday.

Meanwhile, Girvan nightclub Le Mirage will be open to 3.30 am on the Friday and Saturday nights and also to 3am on the Sunday.

Owner Sandra Horne described the festival as the biggest event for Girvan when speaking to the licensing board on Thursday.

She said: “This is the 40th anniversary of the folk festival this year and it’s really vital we keep this event.

“It is fantastic and it’s even bigger than Christmas in Girvan.

“When the pubs start to close, the younger musicians who come to play want somewhere to go on later on.

“There is just a great atmosphere when it’s on.”
