Carrick Rugby racked up an impressive 80-12 win away to Clydebank on Saturday as they played their latest pre-season friendly before the competitive season gets under way next month.
The Carrick coaches decided to rotate their squad for the match and started with a few new combinations which included last year’s Academy 1st XV captain, John Fulton making his debut for the 1s.
Carrick started the match strongly and lead 26-0 after only 20 minutes but then took their foot off the pedal.
Coach Gordon Brown said that they tried to force things too much but with the likes of John Dewar scoring three tries and Grant Alexander playing well in the second row, competition for places is increasing each week.
Coach Brown continued: “Mark Bennett (Glasgow Warriors) is our new backs coach and you can see the work he has been doing with off the ball runners is having a positive effect on our back play.
“It was really encouraging to see us perform so well against opposition we have struggled against in the past two years but it is only a friendly so we aren’t reading too much into it.”
Next week Carrick host Stewartry in their final pre season match at home on Saturday 30th August at 3pm before they tackle Waysiders Drumpellier in the RBS Shield the week after.
