Girvan FC’s cup dream came to an end on Monday night when they were beaten 4-0 by Troon at Portland Park in the Ayrshire Cup semi final.
Having beaten Beith 5-3 in the quarter finals, there was a feeling Girvan could once again spring a surprise against higher league opponents but they got off to the worst possible start.
Troon scored with the first attack of the game, passing swiftly through the Girvan defence with Scott Chatham slotting past David Markey in the Girvan goal.
However, Girvan grew into the game and Jordan Ryan wasted an opportunity when he found space in the box as he fired off target.
Just before the break though, the home side got a vital second goal when an unfortunate deflection broke to David Gillies and he fired high into the roof of the net.
Girvan missed a golden opportunity to get back into the match when a penalty was saved on 53 minutes and just two minutes later Troon effectively killed the tie when Dale Moore slotted home from close range.
There was joy for Troon when Cammy McKinnell came off the bench just a few months after suffering a stroke during the game and he completed his comeback with the fourth goal on 69 minutes.
All credit to Girvan for their run to the semi finals and they must go again when they tackle Kello away from home tonight (Wednesday) in the Ayrshire District League having drawn 2-2 with Saltcoats on Saturday at Hamilton Park.
Girvan twice led in that game through Jordan Ryan and Andrew Hislop but sloppy errors at the back meant they weren’t able to collect all three points.
Girvan are in home action again on Saturday against Muirkirk in the league. Kick off is at 2pm.
The latest winner of the clubs 50/50 draw was Andy F+V who won £84.
