Girvan out after brave display
Largs 2 Girvan 1
DESPITE putting on a good showing against the league leaders in the Ayrshire district first division, Girvan went out of the Ayrshire Press Cup at the weekend.
The game went ahead in fine weather on the 4G pitch at Largs and a video of highlights of the game is also now available on the Girvan FC website.
It was a busy start to the afternoon for Girvan keeper Jarred Nisbet (pictured left) who had to be smartly off his line in the seventh minute.
As Nisbet rushed out at the feet of the oncoming forward the player went down but no penalty was given and Girvan survived this particular early scare.
In the 16th minute Girvan took the lead when Craig Harvey found himself through on goal. Just outside the box his legs were taken from him and from the resulting free kick David McVittie launched a superb shot over the wall and into the top corner of the net.
Girvan’s lead was short lived though as Largs equalised in the 19th minute. Their tall centre half rose above everyone else to head in the corner.
And four minutes later from another corner Largs went 2-1 up. The same player managed to get above the Girvan defenders again and this time nodded the ball down for a Largs forward to put the north Ayrshire side ahead.
In the 27th minute Darren Mitchell knocked a ball down for Harvey but the keeper saved the shot with his legs.
The game became a midfield battle for much of the middle period but came alive again in the 80th minute when Danny Cunningham saw his shot saved.
Four minutes later Largs were down to 10 men after Mitchell was fouled and from there is was all hands on deck as Girvan pushed for an equaliser. But it was not to be.
Girvan will now play Kilwinning Rangers away from home in the league on Saturday. Full details of fixtures, results and league positions are available here
