GIRVAN runner Kerry-Liam Wilson was part of the successful Ronhill Cambuslang team at Strathclyde Park on Sunday, winning the Scottish Veteran Harriers Club Road Relays for the second year in a row.

The M50’s team of which Kerry-Liam is a member also successfully defended their title, making a great day for west coast side.

After a last minute team reshuffle as one of the squad came down with the flu, they were off on the first leg.

Mick O’Hagan ran 21:56 and came home in 17th place, handing over to Charlie Thomson who had a superb run bringing the team up to third place.

Charlie had set off one minute and forty seconds adrift of Irvine AC and came home just 17 seconds off the lead, running 19:51.

When his turn came Kerry-Liam quickly caught the third place runner from Bellahouston Harriers. But it wasn’t until the third mile marker that he finally caught the lead runner from Irvine AC and then continued his good performance to being the team home in first place a full one minute and twenty eight seconds ahead.

He handed over the last leg to Robert Gilroy, who ran the second fastest lap of the day to bring Team Cambuslang home with a huge three minutes and thirty seven second deficit to claim the title for the second year in succession; Robert recording 19:27 for his lap.

More good news was to follow for Kerry-Liam as he recorded the fastest lap of the day with 18:57 for the one full lap of the 3.7-mile Strathclyde Park.

Kerry-Liam said: “I didn’t know how I would fair today with coming off a 110 mile week as I didn’t taper for this race with the recent bad spell of weather. I didn’t want to lose some quality time in fear of the race being cancelled.

“In the end it turned out great as the weather here today at Strathclyde Park was just cold and windy.”
